Chopping is accomplished by the scissor action of the leading edges of the impeller veins cutting against the opposing edges of the cutter bar. All solids are chopped as they enter between the cutter bar and the impeller veins The smaller solids are then easily pumped by the centrifugal action of the impeller.
The cutter nut serves dual functions of fastening the impeller to the shaft and protecting the center hub area by cutting fibrous material that can collect at the low pressure eye of the impeller.
